On August 1, 2011 Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) introduced H.R. 2757, “The Iraq Withdrawal Accountability Act, a bill that will hold President Obama accountable to the US-Iraq Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) signed by President Bush. The SOFA states “All the United States Forces shall withdraw from all Iraqi territory no later than December 31, 2011.” HR 2757, in concert with that pledge, will prevent funds being appropriated in order to keep troops in Iraq past December 31, 2011.
Rep. James McGovern (D-MA) introduced the H.R. 1735, “Afghanistan Exit and Accountability Act” on May 5, 2011. This bill will speed the end of the war in Afghanistan by requiring the President to submit a plan for the “accelerated transition of United States military and security operations […] in Afghanistan to the Government of Afghanistan.”
H.R. 1735 holds the President accountable to the rationale he provided the troop surge of early 2010 would pave the way for an “accelerated transition to Afghan authorities.”
The costs of this war are staggering: deficit spending at roughly $2 billion per week, the death of nearly 1,700 American troops, and future costs approaching $1 trillion for veterans resulting from combat injuries, mental health conditions like PTSD and major depression, and frighteningly high rates of suicide. Please write to your member of congress and ask them to support HR 1735.
